Djokovic d Nishikori in Madrid

Eight women have progressed to the round of sixteen in the Madrid Open, while 10 more men have made it through to the second round.

Four of the women’s second round matches were three setters, and the one which stood out was that featuring Caroline Wozniacki (2) and Ash Barty.

Wozniacki began by breaking the Australian serve, but was down three break points immediately the next game.  Barty failed to convert her chances and the 2018 Aus Open champ then raced off to a 4-0 lead.

Wozniacki was winning most of the points on the Barty second serve, and this contributed to her winning the opening set 6-2.

Up 4-3 and serving in set two, Wozniacki stumbled, double faulting and folding to good shot making from Barty.  The service break, and the following two games gave Barty the set 6-4.

The final set saw Barty in the ascendency, ahead 4-2 and 40-30.  A lucky net cord gave Wozniacki the next point for deuce rather than 5-2 for Barty.  This was the crucial turning point from which Wozniacki won the final four games, fighting off break points in the process, to take the match from under Barry’s nose 6-2 4-6 6-4.
