Tsonga over young gun Shapovalov in 5

On Margaret Court Arena Denis Shapovalov took the opening set off Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (15) 6-3 and is down a break 2-4 in the second.

The winner of this could be the opponent of Nick Kyrgios should the Australian win his second round match.

Deuce in the seventh game and a hot forehand down the line followed by an ace gave Tsonga a 5-2 advantage.

Two big serves at 30-30 from the Canadian forced Tsonga to serve for the set and he suffered a withering forehand pass from Shapovalov for 30-30. Break point followed to which Tsonga brutality dealt, and proceeded to win the game and set 6-3.

Set three began with a service hold for Shapovalov.

A lazy error at the net and 15-30 for Tsonga. He steadied but a series of brilliant backhands from Shapovalov broke the French serve for 2-0.

A consolidating hold from Denis and 3-0.

This pleasure was denied and a love game gave us 5-5.

Tsonga won the next game and again put pressure on Shapovalov to hold service and go to a tie break.

A tie break was confirmed, and despite giving away 14 years of experience, Denis was well in this one.

Shapovalov also saved two break points in the third game, but he managed to win the game and extend the advantage to 3-0.

Tsonga survived a break point so avoiding going down a double break. 1-3.

A second deuce and Jo-Wilfried hanging by a thread.
