Muguruza served first and saved two break points with winners. She held for 1-0.
A love game from Coco was followed by what seemed to be a simple hold by Garbine, but 40-15 was complicated by a double fault which led her down the path to a break point.
Avoided through some lovely tennis, the seventh seed maintained a 2-1 edge.
Serves were held easily until 3-3.
Here, despite hitting multiple forehand and volley winners, and other shots as good as, it took five chances before Vandeweghe finally achieved the break, and it was through a double fault. The American led 4-3.
Vandeweghe held serve without incident, as had been the case throughout the set, and proceeded to attack the Spanish serve, also something not new in this match. Garbine saved a set point, and at 5-4 Coco would serve for set one.
A screaming winner from Garbine gave her the first break point on the Vandeweghe serve for the set and it was saved with an ace. Set point arrived with another backhand winner and the next point confirmed it 6-4 to Coco.
The match was torn to shreds in the first three games of set two when Muguruza was broken twice, the first courtesy of a barrage of winners from Vandeweghe, the third from a series of frustrating poor shotmaking interspersed with the American's continued annoying accuracy.
An extremely disappointing finish became even more so when Garbine failed in her third attempt to hold serve, leaving Coco to serve for the match at 5-0.
A break point for Muguruza but predictably saved with a forehand winner. Match point next and a netted Spanish shot ended the match.
Now it would be an all American semi final after the 6-4 6-0 Coco Vandeweghe exhibition.
2 quarter finals decided today so far and both of my selections had been losers.
